Caffeinated Convo: What are your Sleeping Habits?

Over the past few weeks of travel I’ve slept in various locations–hotels, family guest rooms, the bedroom of a college student. Each time we’ve moved on I’ve had to be sure I grabbed all the essentials. But when it comes to essentials, sometimes they go beyond just a toothbrush and underwear, amiright? Essentials mean sleep!

I’ve got a good friend who cannot sleep without a fan on. She literally has a fan in every bedroom of her house and she owns various sized fans specifically for travel. When I first met her, I thought she was the exception. I’d never met anyone who couldn’t sleep without a fan before. But over the years, I’ve found countless people just like her–all must have white noise to fall asleep. Which begs the question:

What are your sleeping habits?

Do you need white noise to fall asleep? Does your iPhone work overtime at night by playing sounds of the ocean or rainforest? Or maybe gentle music is just what you need to catch a bit of shut-eye?

For me, I must have the most completely complete silence on earth possible. Even the sound of a car driving down our street or a cat meowing by our window will certainly spell disaster for Mr. Sandman and me. (Luckily I don’t have a husband who snores!) Therefore, I’ve become good friends with earplugs over the years. Yes, they can be annoying at first, but once the vacuum of noise has been sucked away, my brain sort of sighs and does a few cartwheels, then settles in for a good night’s rest.

What about you? Do you need white noise to get through the night? Or are you able to fall asleep in any situation? I’d love to take a poll and see just how many white noise people there are verses people like me! Please leave a comment below, friends!

Caffeinated Convo: “Beauty and the Beast”–Original or New?

“Tale as old as time, true as it can be. Barely even friends, then somebody bends, unexpectedly….”

Oh, my heart! Love this song!!

Screen Shot 2017-03-28 at 10.54.35 AM

Okay! Who’s seen the new “Beauty and the Beast”? I was super psyched to take my girls (ages 15, 12 and 6) this past weekend and let me just say—that movie did not disappoint! Fantastically done! Woo! *cartwheel*

Which got me thinking…between the original Disney cartoon version and the newer live-action flick, which one do I like better? So, without further ado, I bring you this week’s Caffeinated Convo question!

Do you prefer the original cartoon “Beauty and the Beast” or the new Emma Watson caffeinated version?

As inclined as I am to choose the original—who doesn’t love a good cartoon?—I think I have to side with the new live-action film! Maybe it’s how incredibly spot-on Emma Watson got the character of Belle? Maybe it was how eloquently Dan Stevens portrayed the Beast? Possibly because the all-star cast literally knocked the Beast off his feet?! All I know is that I wanted to jump through that stinkin’ screen and start dancing and singing and become best friends with LaFou! Eee!

I will admit, as much as I love the Harry Potter movies, I was a little reserved before the movie began—How would I feel about Hermione playing such an iconic role? But then Emma walked on screen and started singing and…holy crow! The girl’s got lungs! I just LOVED her dramatic interpretation of the songs!! I literally teared up during the opening song. And, maybe it’s just me, but somehow I feel like this movie might mean more to those of us who were young when the original came out? (Okay, by young, I mean high school, but still….) But when that theme song played while the Beast and Belle danced around that ballroom—sorry. Total tears! So beautiful, people!! Ack!

So, what about you? Haven’t seen it yet? GO! NOW! Already gone and ready to see it a second time? (As my 12 YO has already done.) Then please join in the conversation! Which movie do you prefer, the old or the new? Or is there an even balance you’d like to strike between the two? Let’s talk, friends!

Caffeinated Convo: What’s Your Favorite Road Trip Game?

Here we are! Another week, another convo. And before you ask, NO, this column hasn’t changed to Wednesday’s. But we lost internet connection almost a week ago and have been in the car for two straight days. (Insert fanny-fatigue here.) Hoping I can get things back on track by next week! *wink, wink*

Having said that, let’s get to this week’s question!

What’s your favorite road trip game?

Can you guess what inspired this question? (Ha!) Seventeen hours in a car encouraged quite a few game ideas to help pass the time. Our travels through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma wouldn’t have been the same without some fun! For our family, car-game-excitement means either the License Plate game or the Going on a Picnic game. The former is a good “long-haul” game, since we choose to combine the plates we see over the entire trip, and not just by the day. And the latter is challenging mentally and helps keep us all awake! (Which in turns helps keep the driver awake, right? Right.)

What about you? Do you have a favorite game you play on road trips? Have a different twist to an old favorite you’d like to share? Please leave a comment below and let’s talk!

Caffeinated Convo: Summer or Winter?

Hey guys! Is it really Wednesday?? Ack! Sorry I’m a day late. We’ve had guests visiting from the east coast and I literally lots track of the days! But their time with us gave me the idea for today’s topic of conversation!

Summer or Winter. Which do you prefer?

IMG_9129

My view from our pool here in Phoenix.

Here in Phoenix we’ve enjoyed a week of temperatures in the 90’s! Which, of course, means plenty of time spent hiking and by the pool. But my friends on the east coast just got hit with a nasty snow storm and are in the process of digging themselves out of all that white stuff! I know that when it comes to the summer/winter seasons, there remain strong alliances among most people. So I ask you, do you prefer the summer or the winter?

For myself, I’m definitely a summer kind of girl! I can’t get enough of the sun, beach, sand, swimming, anything-summer! I would take temperatures above 100 anytime over temps that fall below freezing. (Which is one reason we came to AZ. *wink, wink*) I don’t mind seeing snow while it falls and creates a pretty landscape. And I don’t even mind going out for a little fun building a snowman or joining a snowball fight. (Fifteen minutes tops for me, though!) But I’d gladly give up the rest of winter and the cold temperatures for year round summer, thankyouverymuch!

What about you? Please leave your comments below and let me know which season you prefer! Let’s chat!

Caffeinated Convo: Early Bird or Night Owl?

Ahhh, the age-old question: Are you an early bird or a night owl? Google this topic and you’ll find a plethora of posts defending why one is better than the other, or which great historical figures fell into what category. But despite what the media might lead you to believe, there has never really been one correct answer when it comes to our creativity, right? Whether you are more productive as an early bird or as a night owl depends entirely on you as an individual. You just need to figure out which category you fall into and roll with it!

Where do I land? Well, if you’d asked me that fifteen years ago, the answer would’ve been absolutely, undeniably, whole-heartedly a night owl! For most of my life, the bulk of my creative inspiration always seemed to hit sometime around the midnight hour. I had no problem staying awake into the wee-hours of the morning if the creativity was flowing. Since my children have been born? Not so much. I’ll never know if it was all those nights I stayed awake against my will (as a baby wailed her lungs out) or if my body just decided it needed a change. But all I ever feel after the 10pm timeframe is tired and brain dead. Zombie-time! Furthermore, I was shocked to discover a few years ago that I actually work amazingly well in the early morning! (And by this I mean 6am-ish. I’m not that much of a crazy-person!) Give me 30-60 minutes before breakfast and I can have 1000-1500 words written, no problem. Boo ya! Apparently, I’m an “early bird writer”.

What about you? Do you think best early in the morning or does the dark of night work for you? I’d love to hear the different routines you have that keeps your creativity flowing! Please leave a comment below!

Caffeinated Convo: Cookie Dough – Raw or Baked?

Okay. I have no idea why I chose this topic because I’m already feeling stressed that I have to choose between the two! But I was sitting here trying to think of a topic for our convo this week and I couldn’t get chocolate chip cookies out of my head! Ack! Of all the cookies in the world, these are truly my soft spot. (*Pun absolutely intended*)

Cookie Dough: Raw or Baked?

So, let’s assume that the raw cookie dough I’m referring to does not have eggs, as I know the first thing any responsible person will tell me is, I shouldn’t be eating anything with raw eggs! (Hey, what can I say? I live on the wild side. *wink*) Without squabbling over the type of cookie dough (just choose your favorite), do you prefer to eat it raw or baked?

I will admit, this is a tough one for me, because eating raw cookie dough runs a tight race with cookies just out of the oven–when they’re all soft and gooey? Agh. My mouth is watering already. BUT since I’m a meany and I’ve said it must be one or the other, my choice would be raw! There I said it!

What about you? Do you prefer to skip the time spent baking and just eat it right out of the bowl? Or cook them through so you have plenty for later? Please leave your comments below! I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Caffeinated Convo: Where in the World Would You Move?

Another week, another question! This past week I’ve been sorting through old photos and came across a bunch from when I did missions a few years back. It got me thinking where in the world I would choose to move, if money was no problem? (And language, too!) So this week’s question is:

Where in the world would you move?

This is a tough one for me. I think maybe because I have fond memories of a few countries I’ve visited, but then there are so many more I’d like to visit! So, I’ll answer two-fold:

If I had to choose a country that I’ve visited, I would like to live in Malaysia. I have very fond memories of my time in India and China, but I liked that Malaysia was such a mix of multiple cultures. It was sort of like I had part of India and China with me–although it was very much its own unique culture of Malaysia, too! If that makes sense!

Now, if I were to choose a country I’ve never been to, I think I’d like to live in Ireland. Call me romantic, but every time I hear about Ireland I somehow feel a connection. Like somehow I know I’d fall in love with it and would never want to leave. Of course, I could be completely wrong about this, since I haven’t been! But a girl can dream, right?

What about you? Where in this big, wide world would you want to live, if there were no barriers financially or via language? Please comment below! I’d love to hear where you all have traveled!

Caffeinated Convo: What are you Binge-Watching?

Hello friends! Welcome to another week of Caffeinated ConvoThis week’s question:

What are you binge-watching?

There are so many options for watching new (and quite old) seasons of television shows. And now that Netflix, iTunes and Amazon have joined in the fun of creating exclusive shows just for their subscribers, it makes it hard to walk away from that boob-tube, eh? What shows have caught your interest, anyway?

Currently, I’m re-watching the entire Downton Abbey series, along with my teenaged daughter, who had been too young to watch it when it was first released. I must say, watching all the episodes one after another (and sort of squished together!) does make the experience quite different. I remember at the time that some storylines felt like they took forever to come to completion, but now I realize they really only flowed over 2 or 3 episodes.

What about you? What is your current obsession you’d like to suggest? Have you re-watched a series you’d already seen before? How was the experience different when watched back-to-back, as opposed to having to wait weeks/months in between episodes and seasons? Feel free to talk, friends! I’d love to hear from you!

Caffeinated Convo: Beverage of Choice

Let’s talk!

With the start of February I thought I’d begin something new! (*Cartwheel, flip*) I want to know YOU! What better way to do that than through conversation?

Each Tuesday on Caffeinated Fiction, we will have a ‘Caffeinated Convo’ where I pose a question of the week and YOU answer! Feel free to dialogue amongst each other, and not just me! I’d love for a few of us to get to know one another!

This week’s burning question (literally):

What is your hot beverage of choice?

Now, I know there are very strong alliances within the coffee and tea camps, but are there any other hot drinks I’m missing? Please leave a comment and let’s talk!

My BOC is, well, coffee! (Hence the Caffeinated part of my blog.) But how do I take it, you ask? Well, pretty much however you’re willing to make it! Black. Just milk. Milk and sugar. That beloved flavored creamer. Or any and ALL hand-crafted espresso options (nom nom nom.)

Your turn! I’d love to get to know you!
