DUST BT TREASURE HUNT - CLUE-21.

Are you ready for the interview? Okay!

Hey, Kara! Let’s get to know you! If we were sitting in a coffee shop, what would be your drink of choice? Would you be munching on a snack? Who would you bring with you?

I’d be drinking a mocha frappucino, probably eating a panini, and I’d bring YOU with me, Laura! It’s been too long since we caught up ❤

Agreed, Kara! I miss giving you in-person hugs! *air hug*

So, I had the privilege of reading an early copy of Dust and all I can say is I could. not. put. it down. *hearty eyes* My first question is, what inspired you to write DUST?

I was inspired to try my hand at my own unique take on a Peter Pan retelling after discussing with a friend how much I loved Peter Pan, and yet felt like few retellings truly did the character justice. I’d told her that if I wrote a Peter Pan retelling, I would want to keep it as true to the “original” Peter, the character Barrie created, as possible, while still building off of that foundation. I also told her that I would probably include a side character of my own, someone who maybe had to grow up too fast and could be the exact opposite of Peter, but push him to grow as he helped her rediscover her own belief in magic. I honestly was a little terrified of even trying a story like that, but when I had the chance to mention my concept for Dust to a few publishers at a writer’s conference, and they all loved the idea, I realized that I had something kind of special and needed the courage to just try and write it. ❤

Yes! You did an amazing job giving Peter Pan justice while also creating a fresh take on the story!

Do you have plans to write any other classic retellings?

I’d love to try a Historical Fantasy, probably not a retelling. I’d love to do like the Titanic meets Atlantis someday 🙂

Wow. I would be first in line for that book! *swoon* Both of those stories are fantastic. If my vote counts, I’d love to read it!

What other authors have inspired you in your writing journey?

So many! CS Lewis, Tolkien, Eloise Jarvis McGraw, Nadine Brandes, Mary Weber, Wayne Thomas Batson, Sabaa Tahir, etc.

Oooh, those are such inspirational authors. It’s encouraging to see the wide variety of people that have influenced you!

Tell us about your debut novella, The Girl Who Could See? Will there be any other books from within this universe?

I don’t think there will be any sequels to TGWCS unless the right idea struck. My novella is about a girl named Fern who has an imaginary friend that no one else can see. She tries to ignore him because she is afraid that what everyone says is right–that she is going insane. But it turns out he’s not imaginary and if she doesn’t listen to him soon, her whole world will be destroyed.

I love, love, loved TGWCS! It’s one of my go-to books to recommend to others looking for an imaginative YA read!

What has your journey from teen author to adult author been like?

Am I an adult? Do I have to be? 😉 It’s been a lovely journey! It’s been a joy to get to grow and know so many people in this industry that I love and have inspired me.

Lol. Yeah, adulthood sort of creeps up on you! (One reason I love the Peter Pan universe. I never intend on growing up!)

What encouragement would you give to other teen writers?

Keep writing! Don’t give up! Tell the stories you are passionate about! Do those three things, over and over, you and can succeed ❤

So true!

Are there any other genres you are interested in writing?

Sooo many. Paranormal, Historical Fantasy, High Fantasy, Rom Com (not sure I’m clever enough?), Sci Fi, etc.

I love all those genres, too! *rubs hands together, eagerly awaiting all the books from Kara*

What can we expect to see from you in the future?

Shadow, the sequel to Dust, comes out in July 2021!

Oh yay! I know I’ll be reserving a spot on my bookshelf for my copy of Shadow!

Thank you so much for joining us today, Kara! All your Lost Boys and Girls, as well as my Caffeinated Fiction followers, are so excited to share in celebrating this release with you! *tosses confetti* We all send virtual hugs to you!

Dust Synopsis:

The truth about Neverland is far more dangerous than a fairy tale.

Claire Kenton believes the world is too dark for magic to be real–since her twin brother was stolen away as a child. Now Claire’s desperate search points to London… and a boy who shouldn’t exist.

Peter Pan is having a beastly time getting back to Neverland. Grounded in London and hunted by his own Lost Boys, Peter searches for the last hope of restoring his crumbling island: a lass with magic in her veins.

The girl who fears her own destiny is on a collision course with the boy who never wanted to grow up. The truth behind this fairy tale is about to unravel everything Claire thought she knew about Peter Pan–and herself.
