Caffeinated Speculation: ‘Doctor Who’ Who?

Now that Peter Capaldi has officially announced that he is stepping down from his role on Doctor Who, the internet has been abuzz about possible replacements. Honestly, I try to ignore all speculation when it comes to future characters or storylines of iconic shows, since all it ever really does is get my hopes up for an actor who will likely not ever get that role! But in our long hours of driving across the US, this topic came up and it’s been on my mind ever since.

So, who will become the next Doctor? Well, many months ago, it was suggested that Matt Smith might have been tapped on the shoulder for a second run as The Doctor. He’s made no secret of the fact that he loved playing that character and that if given the chance he would entertain playing him once more. But does that mean he really would pursue this option? And if so, would the producers go in this direction? The idea of a ‘degeneration’ for The Doctor would in fact be quite a unique storyline since fans have long known The Doctor can only ever have thirteen lives. And since Capaldi currently holds the twelfth spot, that would mean this next Doctor would be the last. Ack! Unless, of course, they find a loophole to extend the life of the show. (*cartwheel*) A ‘degeneration’ does seem like a plausible concept, doesn’t it?

Personally, I would love, love, love to see Smith return as The Doctor! He has long been my favorite Doctor–or is it David Tennant? Ugh! I can’t decide!–so I can’t say that I’d be sorry to see his return if the producers went in that direction. Then again, a brand new actor/character with brand new traits sure would be a treat, as well.

Which brings us to more casting buzz. Fans are demanding a ‘ginger’ actor to take the part–since this has long been the wish of The Doctor himself–and some are even begging for a female to take the lead role. (That would certainly stir things up!) I’ve heard it suggested that Harry Potter’s Rupert Grint has been mentioned in passing. (Oh please, please, please! LOVE that guy and his ginger hair! He would be perfect for the role, in my opinion! *wink*) But what about the idea the Tilda Swinton would step into those iconic shoes? Holy cow! That would be fantabulous at worst! She would bring such unique flare to The Doctor and would definitely keep me glued to the screen.

On the other hand, my teenaged daughter would kill me if I didn’t mention Richard Madden, simply because he’s one of her favorite actors ever. (Since Game of Thrones, that is. There you go, Gabby! One vote for Madden!)

So, what say you, fine folk? Are you eagerly anticipating the news of the next Doctor? Or are you prepared to sit patiently until he/she makes his/her grand appearance on screen? Feel free to leave opinions below! I’d love to hear who you’re rooting for!

  1. If Matt really re-interprets the Doctor would be like a dream, Omg I love him so much, it would be just amazing ❤, on the other hand if Richard Madden decides to play the role, I would really like it, but my personal favorite would be Tom Hiddleston (sorry if l write the name wrong) . But we’ll see 😊

  2. I’m TOTALLY going to cry when Capaldi leaves… 😥

I, too, try to stay out of the whole speculation stuff, but I could see them bringing back Smith for more views and stuff … so it’s definitely plausible! 😀
